TNT's Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story

I first learned of Dr. Ben Carson through a Christian teens magazine in the early 90s. I remember being awed by his talent and inspired by his fortitude and determination. Raised almost exclusively by his mother, who was unable to read until very late in life, this young black boy grew up to become, quite possibly, the most gifted pediatric neurosurgeon to ever live. The miracles performed by his hands have surpassed all others and brought to light new courses of treatment for young neurological patients.

TNT's movie Gifted Hands brings Dr. Ben Carson's story to life for all of America to learn. As an adult and mother I am now able to appreciate his the gravity of his work in a way that was incomprehensible to me as a young teen. Gifted Hands shows us how the love of his Mother and her determination for a better life for her boys changed the course of modern medicine, and how loving encouragement (and better hand eye coordination than Michael Jordan) was able to give children and families facing unbearable obstacles a reason to hope.

This is a touching drama that showcases a life filled with purpose and faith, and gives viewers the opportunity to see firsthand Ben Carson's progression from a child failing out of school, to an intelligent teen facing predjudice, to a trouble young man struggling to cope with anger, and finally to the indespesible surgeon that the world knows his as today. This is a must see movie, and one that the whole family will enjoy. Be sure to tune in to TNT tomorrow night at 8/7c to see Cuba Gooding Jr. (Jerry Maguire) and Kimberly Elise (Beloved) star in Gifted Hands.
